Principal - Dr. Ray Shawa
“I am blessed and honored to be serving as principal this year,” says Dr. Shawa.
Dr. Ray Shawa was born and raised in Lake Charles. He came to Hamilton Christian Academy the first time in 1981, serving as the first assistant principal, under Dr. David Moore. He served in that position for 17 years. Dr. Shawa graduated from McNeese State University with a degree in Liberal Studies, then from Southwestern Theological Seminary with a Masters of Religious Education. He also attended Lake Charles Bible College, earning a Doctorate of Ministries. Prior to joining the HCA family, Dr. Shawa served in church staff positions, ranging from Youth Pastor to Minister of Education to Pastor, for over 40 years. After serving as assistant principal, he left HCA to take a senior pastor position at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Creole, Louisiana. He returns this year to serve as principal for HCA.
Dr. Shawa and his wife Gaynel have been married for 44 years. They have three children: Melissa Barrett of Kingwood, TX; Kristi Bellard of Lake Charles, LA; and Jason Shawa of Woodstock, GA. They are also the proud grandparents of seven grandchildren. The Shawa family has a history of being heavily invested in the HCA family. Dr. Shawa’s wife, Gaynel, has been teaching middle school math at HCA for over 20 years. Their daughter Kristi coached HCA basketball for 2 years. Their other daughter Melissa taught elementary school for 6 years. And their son-in-law Chad Barrett taught middle and high school Bible for 2 years.
Assistant Principal - Mr. Tim Sensley
Coach Tim Sensley came to HCA in 2006 to lead the varsity basketball team. He has since received his M.A.T. degree from Louisiana College and been named an assistant principal. His undergraduate work was done at U.S.L. (B.S. Industrial Technology) and Life Christian University (B.A. Theology). Coach Sensley is over facilities and all school discipline. He also serves as the head coach of the golf team.
Coach Sensley had a successful athletic career with the Ragin’ Cajuns before going on to play professional football with the New York Giants and Carolina Panthers. He has also worked as an industrial engineer with Metalforms, Inc. in Beaumont, TX, an operator at Louisiana Pigment, and a draftsman for Precision Engineering in Oxford, MS. Immediately before coming to Hamilton, Coach was employed for five years with the Calcasieu Parish School system.
At Living Word Christian Center, Coach Sensley and his wife, Carol, serve as youth pastors. He is also treasurer for the Lake Charles alumni chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi and enjoys playing golf and spending quality time with his family. The Sensleys two daughters, Camryn and Brianna, attend HCA.
“I love and am blessed that I have had the opportunity to work in a Christ-centered environment,” he says. “HCA has been a blessing to me and my family.” Coach believes Hamilton is a light to the community and strongly recommends the school to anyone looking for a Christ-centered learning environment.
Athletic Director - Coach Kermit Pilgreen
Coach Pilgreen came to HCA as Athletic Director in 2005 to help establish the fledgling football program. His duties include oversight of all of the athletic department.
Before coming to Hamilton, Coach worked in the public school system in both Calcasieu and Beauregard parishes. He retired from coaching at East Beauregard High School. He has a master’s degree +30 from McNeese State University.
“Being a part of HCA has been a God-send to me,” says Coach Pilgreen. It’s a privilege to be around so many fine young men and women at Hamilton Christian. I look forward to each day knowing this is where God wants me to be.”
He and his wife, Sue, have been married for 42 years. Sue has taught at HCA. Their two great nephews have also been associated with Hamilton. Brandon Maggio coached for the Warriors and Alex Drew graduated from Hamilton in 2011.
The Pilgreens are long-time members of Trinity Baptist Church in Lake Charles. Coach enjoys fishing, golfing, and spending time with his family.
